    rhamphotheca: ichthyologist: Eating yourself to death The Black Swallower (Chiasmodon niger) has a stomach that can expand to 3 times its original size. It is known to literally eat itself to death. In this case, the swallower managed to swallow a 86cm long horse mackerel (swallowers are around 20cm long). The meal was so large that it began decomposing inside the gut instead of being digested. Gases were produced as a result which meant that both meal and predator floated right to the surface!
